How much are you willing to spend? If you don't want to spend much, just make sure it comes with a lithium ion battery and maybe image stabilization. If you want to spend a few hundred dollars, you can get a prosumer with high zoom.

There is no best for all situations. All are compromises. I suggest you look at steve's digicam site and see what they deem to be best in different catagories.

The best one is the one that gives you the most camera for the price that you are willing to pay.

Nobody can tell you which is the best... they can only tell you their opinion.

YOU however are the best person to make the determination as to which camera is best for you. Now get out there and do some research and educate yourself about digital cameras.

If you are buying for family purpose then camera with 4x optical zoom with 3 - 6 mega pixel camera is sufficient for you. Go for nikon or canon digital cameras both are the best
